About Sustainable Development Civic Garden

We are an educational garden at Appalachian State University. We are on campus at the Living Learning Center. We use ecological methods and avoid the use of synthetic chemicals and fossil fuels. We use season-extension techniques including cold frames, high tunnel, and greenhouse to grow food year-round. Our greenhouse is heated via active solar collection (evacuated tubes). We build soil with cover crops and compost that we make on-site. We promote biodiversity and control weeds, pest, and disease via beneficial interactions. We donate produce to Farm Cafe. We also function as a community garden where students and community members can grow their own crops. Volunteer days at Wednesdays 3:30-5:00 pm (in the summer 9 - 11 am).
