About Daybreak Homestead

Daybreak Homestead is a 15 acre homestead in Triplett, NC, run by Jess and Alex. Jess works full time at Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture as their Producer Programs Coordinator, and Alex is a Geography lecturer and climate change researcher at Appalachian State University. Together, Jess and Alex are working towards their goals of becoming full-time farmers. They started Daybreak Homestead in 2022 because they wanted to be able to provide healthy food for themselves and their neighbors. Their garden quickly grew from a big plot, to a 1/4 acre, and now to a 1/2 acre operation in 2023. Triplett is a food desert, and Jess and Alex are passionate about making produce more easily available while rehabilitating the depleted soil of their homestead. Their goal is to learn how to live in harmony with the land, nourish their soil, and share their abundance with the High Country community while achieving food independence! They grow a diverse range of vegetables (tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, kale, hot and sweet peppers, etc.), kitchen and medicinal herbs (rosemary, sages, tulsi, basils, parsley, dill, lemon balm, etc.), and raise a small number of free range ducks and chickens for eggs. They also recently added flowers to the operation, and offer traditional flowers like tulips, daffodils, yarrow, dahlias, lupine, and others. DBH uses natural practices to produce the most healthy and sustainable produce possible and to give our animals the happy lives they deserve! They use no till practices, and try to produce as many of their own soil amendments on the property as they can, with the goal of closing the homestead's nutrient cycle. You can find their products on the High Country Food Hub and at the King Street Farmers Market in Boone, NC, and can follow their journey on instagram at @daybreakhomestead!
